The cardinal’s chamber is like a “garden,” incorporating classical texts, medieval symbols, and themes of Christian salvation—a profound reflection on the path to perfection in earthly life.
The decorative registers begin at the top:
• Friezes with the coats of arms of the cardinal, the Visconti, and other noble families.
• Twelve trees on a red field, wrapped in cartouches. At the base of each tree, two putti (cherubic figures) engage in scenes of harvesting fruits in a “hortus conclusus” (enclosed garden).
• A “velarium” (a decorative sheet) with cherubs, garlands, and various flowers.
• A frieze featuring pairs of parrots and classical mottos.
